How does Sherlock Holmes fit into our world?
Though Sherlock Holmes is not considered "normal" by many current societal standards, he still makes an effort to blend into our society.
The first notable way in which Holmes fits into our society is through his occupation. The mere act of crime-solving as his occupation fundamentally requires Holmes to be a part of our society, since he must acquire information from other people within our society. And as crime-solving is a social deed that most people consider to be necessary, Sherlock Holmes is portrayed as a necessary person, who is, however, not exactly loved. The most intricate relationships of Holmes is one involving the criminals -- Sherlock is able to overcome his enemies through crime-solving. By putting the lives of other individuals ahead of his when solving cases, Holmes is effectively demonstrating the heroic quality of selflessness. As a result, he is able to simultaneously eliminate his criminal enemies and improve the safety of lives for the people of London.
However, Holmes is not perfect -- his sheer dedication to his occupation has resulted in an inherent aloofness in his behavior and personality, oftentimes to an antisocial stage. Hence, although he is heralded as a master crime solver in the media, he is also simultaneously looked down upon as a sociopath. Despite his intentions to be a selfless fighter against crime, Holmes does not meet the exact standards of a societally functional person.
