Sherlock is a popular crime drama television series airing in the United Kingdom by BBC. Its main character, Sherlock Holmes, is portrayed by British actor Benedict Cumberbatch. The television show was adapted by Steven Moffat, Mark Gatiss, and Stephen Thompson from a series of novels originally written by Sir Author Conan Doyle in 1886 under the same name. Doyle drew inspiration from a real person he studied from at the time, Dr. Joseph Bell. Owing a lot to the source of Doyle's inspirations, Holmes is Scottish/British. The adaptation to film largely occurred in the 20th century, enjoying its peak fame circa 1927.
For most individuals, Holmes would be considered not to meet the definition of "normal" within our society. His love for visualizing and hunting for the little details stand above all else within his life -- the love for crime-solving. Thus, Holmes' love and passion for solving mysterious crimes ultimately led him into a career as a detective -- an occupation in which he is glad to spend every waking moment on. Despite moving to London, a densely populated city by both Doyle's and Moffat's standards, he is unable to easily meet and make new friends. This is largely due to the lack of easy communications -- this enhances the portrayal of Holmes as someone who much prefers to work alone, except for his trusted friend and crime-solving partner, Dr. John Watson. Sherlock Holmes is clever, curious, and blunt -- his willingness to frequently ignore the societal norms (such as suppressing some of his thoughts in order to avoid offending the other party) would cost him some of his values.
